Patlifinders Minutes of July 19, 2001

Karen Borga, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 6:45PM at the Forest Resource Education Center.

Those in attendance walked the Sensory Awareness Trail with forestry personnel before the meeting.

The June minutes were approved.

Bowman Road/Forestry Center. Karen Walzer — Saturday, October 6th Fall Festival Day at the Forest Resource Education Center

from lOAM and concludes at 3PM with fun, food and games for the whole family, rain or shine. For further information, please call (732) 928-0029.

Volunteers are needed to lead a hike during the festival.


Website: Madeleine Nist — Many updates were posted.

Biking: Uriah Albrink — First official bike ride — Saturday, August 4th at 8:30 am, Allaire State Park. It will be a five mile ride.

Hiking: Jim Doyle — July hike is scheduled for Saturday, July 21st at 9am, destination Cattus Island Park. Anyone interested, please email jdoyle36l1 @aol.com or phone 833-0508. It's a short 3-mile hike but should be interesting and scenic. Children welcome. Bring snacks. Directions are : RT 571 south past routes 70 and 9. At Hooper Ave. (549) take jug handle past light to head north. Pass Ocean County Mall and Ocean County College and make right onto Fisher Blvd. Make a left into Cattus Island Blvd. And head to the Cooper Environmental Center. We will meet there. Heavy rain will cancel. I will call everyone who gives me advanced notice they are coming by 8am.

Next Months Planned Activities:
As mentioned, I would like to do a canoe trip perhaps on the Toms River. There is a canoe rental place on Rt. 527 just off Rt 528. I will look into costs if there is interest. Looking at mid to end of August for date. Please let me know if you're interested.

Other news:
Joining the NY/NJ Trail conference. Received organization application from Scott Voorhees. Cost is $50.00. Gave cost info to Tom Stevens to submit for payment. Application is complete. Needs final review. Hope to submit in July or early August.

I am starting a library of maps. (State, county, federal, or private.) If anyone is interested in borrowing or donating any, please email me.

Johnson Park: Sam Wimmer — Pathflnders purchased a trailhead sign at the end of last year. Karen Borga will contact the Township Committee for permission to put it up at the proposed carriage trail at Johnson Park. The sign is at Art's right now.

Mapping:
Tom Stevens — Colleen Brandon did some research at Colliers Mills and is marking trails for us.

Scrapbook: Lauren and Alyson Stevens — The scrapbook was passed around. If you have any pictures, please bring them in.

Publicity: Art Rosky — absent — no report

Land Acquisition: Karen Borga — Lisa MacCullum sent Jackson a letter offering Frank Applegate property for purchase at their cost, $23,000. The committee rejected that offer.

Membership: Dawn Rakow — Nothing new at this time.

Insurance:
Karen Layton — absent — no report

Frank Applegate Road Nature Trail: Dawn Rakow and Madeleine Nist —Arrangements have been made with Bil-Jim to have woodchips dropped off for the trail. As time permits, Public Works is going to move the chips in the parking area deeper into the woods. NJCF has a current wetlands permit. Stream Encroachment permit is needed for the boardwalk and bridges. Karen Borga sent an email to Lisa MacCullum asking if NJCF will pay the permit fee. We are waiting for an answer.
Grants: Dawn Rakow Nothing new at this time.

Pathfinders Events: Jackson Day, Saturday, September 22— Joy Cole will look into it for us. Madeleine is checking into making new pamphlets to hand out at our booth. Pathfinders will march in the parade and work a booth.

Discussions: 1. Dawn Rakow contacted Suzanne of the Jackson Women of Today. There is a shed at their new house. If the JWOT are not using the shed, Pathflnders may be allowed to store our wheelbarrows, tools, etc, there. Dawn is going to check into getting prices for a shed for us.

2. The Jackson Recreation Mater Plan is available at the clerk's office. Some of the plan is available on-line at CME Associates website. www.CMEUSAl .com Karen Borga is waiting to hear from Greg Valesi. She asked for our own copies of the big maps used in the presentation at the planning board meeting.
